This book review explores Purpose: The Remix by Jade Simmons. I was privileged to listen to and meet Jade Simmons at a business conference this year. She talked about purpose in a way I hadn’t heard anyone speak about it before. Before her speech was over, I was already on Amazon looking for her book. I needed to read more about how she views purpose. I bought and read it, and now, let’s dive in.
Purpose: The Remix
The first few sentences in a book must engage the reader right away. No matter how interesting a book is, if you do not capture the reader’s attention in a few sentences, you reduce the likelihood of generating interest in the rest of the book. This book definitely met the brief. The very start of Chapter 1 is a story about ‘Fiona.’ Her story was exciting and engaging, and the lesson at the end made sense. The book’s first chapter uses different people’s stories to drive home lessons about purpose. For example, Fiona’s story taught us that passion does not equal purpose, and Marcus’ story illustrates that personality is not purpose. There are interesting stories and lessons in Chapter 1, which made me eager to read further.
What is Purpose?
Throughout the book, Jade talks about her journey to finding purpose, which is relatable. The book talks about what purpose is not, but she also dedicates a chapter to discussing her discovery of what purpose is. I haven’t heard her definition of purpose before, but I greatly like it. According to Jade, “Your purpose is not the thing you do. It’s the thing that happens in others when you do what you do.”
This definition is compelling. Oftentimes, we regard an activity like philanthropy, teaching, our careers, etc, as our purpose. To Jade’s point, the activity themselves is not our purpose. Our true purpose is the effect on others. How does what you do impact others?
Final Thoughts
Overall, I learned a lot from the book. I particularly like the chapter that explores the definition of wisdom and the chapter that talks about the difference between passion, purpose, and destiny.
The book also explores how to make sure people do not push you out of your purpose (hint: when it comes to challenging situations, learn when to fight or flee), how to be someone who ignites purpose in others, and the correlation between purpose, identity, and peace.
The book is filled with hidden gems. I like that Jade talks about the different facets of purpose and generously shares details of her ‘purpose’ journey.

As always, read it, share it with friends, and do not forget to come back and share your thoughts with me.
